I agree that Powell won't fold. But so what? His term as Chair ends in less than a year. His term as Governor ends in 2028. I own bonds maturing in the 2050s.
An independent central bank is a valuable institution. It's the institution, and respect for it, that matters. Not any one person.
Does the Fed have the popular and political support to withstand presidential pressure? That is the question, and I don't feel confident about the answer.
