That's not always the case. Cisco's earnings have increased pretty much every year for the past 25 years, yet its stocks price remains firmly below the 2000 peak. And that's because (as the article demonstrates), the link between earnings growth and stock price growth is tenuous. Even over very long time periods, a strong link between stock prices and earnings is hard to find.
