Insightful, but one question that arose for me: how much correlation exists between "Cost of Living" and "Median Income"? First glance, I would think that if people are emigrating from states with higher costs of living, those same places would generally have higher median incomes (e.g. San Fransisco and New York City, as opposed to Austin and Phoenix).
