It's been nearly four decades since Brinson and Fachler released their paper on pension performance that reached the same conclusion: the active performance effect was negative. The French writer and critic Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr nailed it when he said: "The more things change, the more they stay the same." (But this sounds nicer in French: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.")
