Great article. I'm curious to know if anyone described ETFs as a "derivative". I suspect not because of the potential for negative connotation. However, the definition of Derivative (noun) is: something that is based on another source. Is that not the exact description of an ETF? And it is the mechanics, the structure of ETFs, generally speaking, that raise questions about the susceptibility of ETFs to potential systematic risk and illiquidity.
