Hedge funds began to run into the limits to arbitrage in the late '90s. Since then, most of them that don't limit the size of their funds have not done well. There are some clever hedge funds pursuing "proprietary" niches. Most aren't taking new clients. After all, and strategy can get too much money -- it doesn't mean the idea is invalid, just crowded. As such, assets have to exit hedge funds on net.
