Hendry has hit the nail on the head. His evaluation of the factors that lead to professionalism and the mistrust of financial services are well stated.
It is my perspective that corruption comes from the top of an organization. It may leak downward, but repeated stories in the media, and those about Soros, for example, who does not appear to be a philanthropist, but more so someone who wants to legally bring down the bank, perpetuate the perception that financial services people are at large are unethical.
The investment picture is so confusing to the general public, they will turn somewhere for professional advices and management…and where will that be?
Our culture has changed over a period of decades to the acceptance and tolerance of falsification. I think that might be the overriding force of how the general public sees institutions such as government, military, educational, financial, regulatory….and so forth.
Modern media has made the whole thing incredibly visible.
