Thanks for visiting Enterprising Investor. You are correct that the S&P 500 Index was formally launched by Standard & Poor's in March of 1957. S&P retroactively calculated its value going back to 1926, using an arbitrary average base value of 10 for the 1941-1943 period. It is my understanding that Bloomberg is using this data.
