The hand wringing commentary by Higgins is an awful and spectacular reminder of American failure. The only answer which will be acceptable to both sides of politics will be to increase taxes. A value added tax is a far more efficient tax than retail sales taxes. Privatization of social security will provide a far more efficient and sustainable funding for retirement. Privatization will deny politicians on both sides the opportunity for profligacy. A VAT which replaces retail sales tax plus privatization of social security need to be embraced by leading financial organizations and Mr Higgins
