Practitioners' Insights: Shareholder Activism in India and Asia Pacific: Recent History and the Road Ahead

  1. Aditi Uttamchandani
  2. Sivananth Ramachandran, CFA, CIPM

Over the past decade, institutional investors have made their presence felt in India and the Asia-Pacific region. Their efforts put errant managements on notice, enhanced shareholder influence, improved governance, and set encouraging examples for others to follow. As another proxy season comes to a close, Aditi Uttamchandani of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) will take us through the key trends in regulations, offer insight into institutional engagement, and discuss proxy voting activities. She will also explain how the role of proxy advisers is evolving to meet these new challenges and opportunities.

Learning outcomes:

  • Learn about reforms in corporate governance, changes in regulations, and the impact on agenda items as well as disclosure practices.
  • Discuss the key topics of interest for shareholders in Indian companies and contrast them with the APAC region.
  • Compare voting patterns across the India market with other markets.
  • Review recent cases of agenda items that have failed to achieve shareholder approval and agenda items for which higher votes against the measure were reported.
