It says something about the state of podcasting in finance that someone can come up with a top 10 list.
John Kador at WealthManagement.com did just that with his "10 Best Podcasts for Financial Advisors." The list includes some well-known programs, like Planet Money and Freakonomics Radio, but also some lesser-known podcasts, like Between Now and Success.
A balanced podcast diet, of course, requires more than just money and finance content.
Ellen Gamerman at the Wall Street Journal uses the forthcoming Thanksgiving holiday as an opportunity to recommend some podcasts in different categories, including "Driving with Smart People" and "Driving with Pop Culture Fans." In any event, checking out Surprisingly Awesome or How Did This Get Made? may make your drive go by all that much faster this year.
If you have already checked out last week’s edition of Essential Listening, let’s move on to some new podcasts I think are worth listening to this week — or any other:
- The former chairman of the US Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke was on Wall Street Week recently in support of his book A Courage to Act: A Memoir of a Crisis and Its Aftermath. In this episode Anthony Scaramucci and Gary Kaminsky discuss Bernanke's life before the Fed, the lead up to the financial crisis, its aftermath, and his plans for the future. (Wall Street Week)
- Barry Ritholtz of Ritholtz Wealth Management interviews economist David Rosenberg of Gluskin Sheff. They examine the (solid) state of the economy and how Rosenberg's transition from the sell-side to the buy-side changed his perspective on forecasting. (The Big Picture)
- Cullen Roche of Orcam Asset Management shares his unique view of the monetary system and his favorite book for investors with Preston Pysh and Stig Brodersen. (The Investors Podcast)
- Jake Taylor talks with Andrew Palmer of The Economist and author of Smart Money: How High-Stakes Financial Innovation Is Reshaping Our World for the Better. The focus of their discussion is how, in the post-financial crisis world, finance is being used to solve some intractable problems. (Five Good Questions)
- Shane Parrish and Chris Dixon, of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, delve into the history of venture capital and the reasons why firms fail. (The Knowledge Project)
- Everyone who goes to the grocery store is confronted by a rack of gift cards near the registers. Imagine if you could buy stocks via a gift card. In this podcast, Zack Miller talks with Avi Lele of Stockpile, a start-up that is trying to bring excitement back to share ownership by embracing a gift card model. (Tradestreaming)
- Behavioral economist Dan Ariely visits Google to talk dating and relationships. The author of Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions applies behavioral research to the ongoing challenge of finding (and keeping) a mate. (Talks at Google)
- Brian Koppelman interviews Jesse Itzler a serial entrepreneur and the author of Living With a SEAL: 31 Days Training With the Toughest Man on the Planet. They discuss how Itzler fights against complacency in business (and life) and how living for a month with a Navy Seal showed him just how much potential he had in reserve. (The Moment)
