Following global trends, the investment space in India has witnessed a sea change in the past seven years, with passive index-based investment beginning to challenge the dominance of an active fund investment style.
Since December 2007, assets under management (AUM) in index-based products globally have increased at a rate of 19.5% per year, reaching $8.6 trillion at the end of March 2021. This increase has re-established the fact that passive funds score over their active counterparts in providing investors with low-cost access to capital markets. In India, the ramp-up in AUM of exchange-traded funded (ETFs) over the past two fiscal years has been dramatic, as it witnessed fresh inflows of about Rs 1 lakh crore. Likewise, the fixed-income space in India is seeing changes with more transparency and the emergence of various research and analytics tools. For investment professionals, new and exciting career opportunities have opened up.
